Description
This is a Large Antique Celtic Design Folio Plate LXV Entitled "Grammar of Ornament".At the time of the original listing, we are in the process of listing a large number of antique and vintage items purchased in England. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well.
The information we received is that the folio that contained this plate was likely a Victorian piece. Since this is plate number LXV (i.e. # 40), I assume this plate is from a fairly large portfolio with 40 or more plates, presumably illuminating designs of different cultures, ethnicities, and styles.
found
an age
attribution for another bobbin and needle case made in England that appeared to be identical in design that was attributed as circa 1860 but I do not have any other specific knowledge of the age of this piece.
The large folio sheet is 15" x 22 1/2". On the AbeBooks site I found the following information
"Octavo (9 inches x 6 inches) and quarto (12 x 9.5) are the most common sizes for books, but there are also elephant folios (up to 23 inches tall), atlas folios (25 inches tall), and the whopping double elephant folios (50 inches tall). As printing technologies developed in the 19th century, larger books became easier to publish although they remained expensive and luxurious."
Based on that information, assume this plate would be classified as being from an "elephant folio". The page with the above information also had an illustration of pages from a giant illuminated Koran with 5 ft. x 7 ft. sheets.
The intricate Celtic designs are fully colored in a host of beautiful hues.
Condition
The piece is overall in very good to excellent condition, with a couple of minor nicks out of the outermost rounded edges, possibly artifacts of the original creation, and a variable patina of age from handling over a period of many years. The threads on the cap of the needle case are in excellent working condition. As found, the page is in a protective plastic sheath, and it will be shipped that way, very losely rolled in the same very heavy duty cardboard tube we used to get it home safely from England.
